Among other things Nicholas Stern has urged Australia to reduce greenhouse gases by 30% by the year 2020. Typically John Howard's government has responded with its favourite tactic – "Let's Ignore Facts & Create Fear". This time they claim Australia's economy would be devastated by setting such targets. Howard said 2020 is only 13 years away and the timeline is unrealistic. If Howard had listened, his 11-year government could have been well on the way to achieving that target. But he and his Ministers continued to deny climate change existed. Only now, with an election pending, has he paid token attention. Up until this year his interest in climate change was, I guess, only if it affected his Lord’s cricket match.
